Joe Dougherty

Partner and West Coast Practice Leader at Dalberg Global Development Advisors

Joe Dougherty is a Partner and West Coast Practice Leader at Dalberg Global Development Advisors. Based in San Francisco, Joe has served as a trusted advisor to leading nonprofits, corporations, government agencies and foundations for twenty years, and has worked in more than thirty countries. He recently helped develop a new, five-year strategic plan for Room to Read, an education-focused nonprofit with an annual budget of nearly $50 million. He also led the design and launch of the new, $34 million Fund for Agri-Finance in Nigeria and currently serves as Team Leader for USAID’s $60 million, global Investment Support Program. Before joining Dalberg in 2012, Joe was the Managing Director of the Economic Growth practice at Cardno Emerging Markets and, earlier, Technical Director for Financial Sector Development at Deloitte. Earlier, Joe served as A.T. Kearney’s first Country Manager for Thailand, working extensively across southeast Asia. Joe has also worked at Citibank and the US FDIC’s Office of Capital Markets as well as Bank of Ireland’s Agribusiness Lending and Small Enterprise Support Units in Dublin. In addition to his work in international development, Joe has taught graduate courses at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and the University of California Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, where he currently teaches a course on social enterprise. He has served on the Board of Directors of the DREAMS Center for Art Education – an award-winning program for at-risk youth in North Carolina, as well as the NC World Trade Association. Joe Dougherty graduated summa cum laude from Loyola University in Maryland and received an MA from SAIS as well as an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.
