Imagine having the power to turn one dollar into five—not through magic, but by investing in people. Now, picture that dollar not just going to one person, but to many people, eventually rippling out to uplift entire communities. This is what Village Enterprise does every day in rural Africa, where every dollar generates over five times the social value.
Traditional aid has long been the go-to solution for many organizations working to alleviate poverty in Africa. However, it often provides only short-term relief and risks perpetuating dependency instead of driving sustainable economic growth.

Village Enterprise takes a different approach, equipping people living in extreme poverty with the tools and resources necessary to create lasting change. This approach has yielded remarkable results. To date, we have trained over 321,932 entrepreneurs, started more than 100,035 businesses, and transformed the lives of 2,031,825 individuals across rural Africa.
Our 5x social return on investment (SROI) is more than a statistic—it represents how our poverty graduation program leads to real, tangible change and builds a foundation for a sustainable future.
Below, we explore how Village Enterprise achieves this remarkable impact and why our approach resonates with those committed to driving meaningful change.
What is SROI, and why does it matter?
When we think of ROI, or return on investment, we typically focus on financial returns—how much money is gained for every dollar invested. It’s a simple calculation of profit or loss. However, social return on investment goes beyond financial gains. It monetizes extra-financial benefits—like social and environmental improvements which conventional accounting often misses—and compares it to each dollar spent. In essence, SROI measures how effectively resources are used to create lasting social and economic value.

Aligned with the principles of effective altruism, our work maximizes measurable outcomes per dollar spent. Unlike traditional charity metrics that focus on inputs or short-term outputs, we prioritize sustainable, community-driven change. Every dollar invested fuels a cycle of growth and resilience, creating benefits that extend far beyond immediate needs.
Celeste Brubaker, Village Enterprise’s Chief of Impact and Innovative Financing, explains: “The driving question behind our work is, ‘What impact, for whom, at what cost?’ SROI helps us make informed decisions, ensuring we optimize resources without compromising on impact.”
Considering success in this way strikes a crucial balance, guiding Village Enterprise to pursue meaningful results without falling into a “race to the bottom” where cost-cutting becomes the only measure of success. Put another way, social return on investment challenges charitable organizations to optimize resource use. “It’s a great way to make tradeoff decisions about interventions and iterations of interventions,” Celeste adds.
Achieving 5x SROI with Village Enterprise’s poverty graduation model
Attaining a 5x SROI is a significant milestone for Village Enterprise. For every dollar invested, we’re creating over five times the social value in terms of new income generation in the communities we serve, demonstrating the true power of investing in people.
Our success lies in our poverty graduation program, which combines business training, startup cash, mentorship, and community support to empower vulnerable women, youth, and refugees to build resilience and self-sufficiency.

And how did we arrive at the SROI figure?
Our most recent randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted in Kenya and Uganda evaluated the effectiveness of our poverty graduation program by comparing the cost of the program’s implementation—$3,942,476—with the estimated lifetime impact on household income, which was $21.06 million. The program yielded a 5.34x benefit-cost ratio, which means that for every dollar invested, the program generated over five dollars in income for Village Enterprise’s entrepreneurs.
Notably, subanalysis of the RCT in Kenya revealed an even higher benefit-cost ratio of 8.2, indicating that the program generated $8.20 for every dollar invested among participating entrepreneurs.
All this goes to show that Village Enterprise is going beyond providing short-term relief and has created a program that emphasizes long-term impact. By focusing on outcomes, Village Enterprise helps communities to thrive long after the program ends. This is poverty alleviation at its best—effective, sustainable, and cost-efficient.
Real-world change: Translating SROI into tangible community benefits
The true impact of our SROI shines through the countless lives transformed by our poverty graduation program.
Village Enterprise entrepreneurs have built businesses that generate sustainable incomes, enabling them to provide for their families, send their children to school, and address issues like malnutrition. For some, the financial stability allows them to fund their own education and others can afford healthcare for their loved ones, ensuring access to medical care that was once out of reach.
As these entrepreneurs diversify their income, they gain more financial security. With the stability provided by their businesses, some have renovated their homes, acquired assets, and reinvested in their communities. Many have also adopted sustainable practices that protect the environment and wildlife, all while growing their businesses. These benefits don’t just lift individuals out of extreme poverty; they extend to entire communities, driving sustainable change.
With over two million lives transformed and counting, these entrepreneurial achievements are just a small fraction of what Village Enterprise has accomplished. In fact, a five-year longitudinal study revealed that the first-time entrepreneurs who participated in the poverty graduation program not only maintained but often improved their socioeconomic status long after completing the program.
